My main research interests are juvenile delinquency and adolescent sexuality. In the past, I have explored the relationships between parental monitoring, association with deviant peers, and self-reported delinquency. Related to this, I think research on parental monitoring and child disclosure should be encouraged in the Malaysian setting given the lack of understanding of how the Malaysian culture that has different sets of findings from the West might influence the dynamics. In the meantime, I am growingly interested in the specific risk factors of delinquency in the Malaysian setting, which is religiosity. While religiosity is shown to have a mixed relationship with delinquency in other contexts, the influence of religiosity on delinquency is not known in Malaysia. At the same time, I am also interested in adolescent sexuality, mainly in the issue of statutory rape committed by underage male offenders. I would like to understand their mentality and whether such like-aged exemptions such as Romeo and Juliet Laws in the United States.
